What Is It Like to Stay in a Wooden Cabin Deep in the Grassland? Xiao Chen’s Honest October Stay

Grassland wooden cabin

Hi everyone, I’m Xiao Chen, a young man who loves exploring the grasslands. This October, right after the National Day holiday, I stayed three nights in a wooden cabin homestay in Hulunbuir. Days later, I still want to write it down. This isn’t an ad — just an honest stay report.

1. Why Choose a Wooden Cabin Homestay

Hotels are convenient, but in the grassland, you haven’t really stayed there until you’ve spent a night in a wooden cabin. October is the off-season, prices drop, and the cabins come with fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling windows — waking up to golden grasslands outside your window is a picture no photo can fully capture.

2. How Much Per Night

To be upfront: our cabin deep in the grassland cost about 300+ yuan a night in October, including breakfast — less than half the peak summer price. I compared several booking platforms and finally booked on Meituan with a coupon that saved a few dozen yuan. Traveling off-peak really pays off.

3. What’s Inside the Cabin

The room isn’t big but has everything: underfloor heating plus a fireplace (it’s genuinely warm at night), a comfortable wooden bed, strong hot water, and a small balcony for stargazing. The owner is a local. Mornings brought hot milk tea, Russian-style bread, and jam; when we left, they gave us a bag of mushrooms they’d dried themselves. That human warmth is priceless.

4. Things to Watch Out For

First, the temperature gap between day and night is huge — October nights hover around zero, so bring a down jacket and hand warmers. Second, homestays sit deep in the grassland and GPS signal can vanish; arrange pickup with the owner in advance. Third, pack snacks and instant noodles — there’s nowhere to buy food nearby. Fourth, check whether breakfast is included and whether pets are allowed before you book, so there’s no arguing at check-in.

5. One Honest Thought

Staying at a homestay is about the warmth and the quiet. With fewer tourists in October, you can genuinely hear the wind at night. A hotel can’t give you that. If you want to try it, book the kind of cabin with a fireplace and a talkative owner — and read recent reviews closely, not just the photos.

6. A Checklist for Those Coming After Me

Before booking, check recent negative reviews — focus on “cleanliness,” “hot water,” and “heating.” Photograph the room’s condition when you arrive, just to have a record. Keep the booking page and double-check the price before checking out. Ask about the checkout time — grassland homestays usually follow the platform rules, but there’s often some flexibility.
