Hi everyone, I’m Old Zhou, a Hulunbuir native. Every October my feed fills with friends visiting the grassland for the golden autumn. Well, let me do what locals do best: give you the route and the budget, figured out to the last detail. Treat this as a free 5-day self-driving plan — follow it and you’ll mostly avoid the big mistakes.
1. The Route (Tested Version)
Day 1: Land in Hailar, rent a car, rest in town, hotpot for dinner. Day 2: Hailar → Morigele River (free viewpoint; the river bends against golden grasslands in October are postcard-perfect) → Ergun. Day 3: Ergun → Birch Forest Scenic Area → Enhe Russian Ethnic Township, stay in a wooden cabin. Day 4: Enhe → Shiwei → along the border road to Heishantou for sunset. Day 5: Heishantou → Manzhouli, see the Matryoshka Square and the border gate, head home.
2. Rough Budget
Based on two people in one car, staying at ordinary homestays: SUV rental around 350 yuan per day; fuel for roughly 1,000 km, 500-600 yuan; accommodation about 300 per night, four nights at 1,200; food about 150 per person per day. Add flights and one trip lands around 3,000+ per person — less off-peak.
3. Key Driving Reminders for October
Some grassland roads have no phone signal — download offline maps in advance. Morning frost is common, so check tire pressure and coolant before heading out. Livestock crossing the road is normal — don’t honk and rush them. Fill the tank in towns; gas stations are scarce deep in the grassland. And on windy days the viewpoints are gusty — hold on to your hat.
4. Golden Hours for Photos
In October the best light is 8-10 am and 3:30-5:30 pm. Shoot the river bends against the light and the birch forest in side light — both are winners. Don’t shoot at midday; the light is too harsh. Drones are fine away from restricted zones, but don’t fly near the border — locals all know this.
5. Food Not to Miss
Hand-pulled lamb and copper hotpot in Hailar, dairy products and Russian bread in Ergun, and Russian cuisine in Manzhouli. Remember: don’t eat right at the scenic gates — walk two blocks into town and the same dishes are 30% cheaper.

6. How to Book Accommodation Without Getting Burned
Book wooden cabins in Ergun and Enhe well ahead in October; good rooms are scarce. When booking, look for recent reviews mentioning “hot water,” “heating,” and “cleanliness.” Keep the booking page and check the price at check-in. The yurts at Heishantou for sunset-watching are basic; if you want comfort, stay in Ergun town instead.
7. One Last Bit of Advice
Hulunbuir in October is a quiet kind of beautiful — few people, wide views, made for slow travel. No need to rush the route; even half a day of doing nothing is worth it. That’s my guide. Questions? Drop them in the comments — I’m a local, I’ll tell you everything I know.
