College English Level 4 Reading Long Difficult Sentences Cracking Skills (Divided Edition)

Level 4 reads a total of 40 minutes, with an average of less than 1 minute per question. If you have to read each long and difficult sentence twice, there is simply not enough time. Therefore, the ability to deal with long and difficult sentences directly determines whether reading can be completed and done correctly.

1. The essence of long and difficult sentences

Long Difficult Sentences = Trunk + Grooming. The trunk is the subject (who did what), and the modifications are the attributes, adverbs, and interpositions. As long as the trunk is taken out first, the remaining grooming is also “additional information”, which does not affect the core meaning.

2. Finding the predicate is the key

A sentence is longer, and the main sentence has only one predicate verb. Find it, and the subject and object of the main sentence are often nearby. Tips for finding predicates: Exclude verbs in clauses (clauses have their own predicates), and the rest is the predicate of the main clause.

III. Clause marker words should be sensitive

that/which/who/whose/where/when/why/if/because/although… See these words and immediately know that the clause begins. Bracket the clause and the backbone is immediately clear.

4. Practice less refinement

Dismantling 2 long and difficult sentences per day is more effective than extensive reading of 10 articles. Write it down when you take it apart: what is the main trunk, who is modified by each clause, and translated. If you persist for 30 days, you will find that the long and difficult sentences become “short sentences” plus “decoration”.
