The opening report is the first level of the graduation thesis, and if it is poorly written, it will be called back. Every year, students are anxious because their opening statements are called back by their tutors. In fact, the opening report has a fixed structure and routine. It is not difficult to understand the requirements of each part and fill in its own content according to the template.
I. Topic selection is half of success
The topic selection should meet the three conditions of “small and specific, research value and feasibility”. Small = narrow scope (do not “China economic development research” such a large topic); valuable = practical or theoretical significance; feasible = data, literature, ability to do.
II. How to write a literature review
Don’t list “Zhang San said… Li Si said…”, we should sort it out according to the theme, and finally point out the research gap: “Existing studies pay more attention to X and insufficient attention to Y. This article intends to cut from Y.” This is the value of your research.
III. Common Errors
- The topic is too large for space;
- The literature review is not rated;
- The research method is generalized (only “literature research method” is too simple);
- Unrealistic schedule;
- Reference formatting is confusing.
IV. Preparation for defense
Questions and answers are generally presented in 5-8 minutes + questions and answers. Prepare the 3-minute version and the 5-minute version, focus on “why choose this question + how to prepare for it”, and honestly say “this question I will think about further in the study” when asked not to.
